I was standing 12 years old dust covering me the trucks bounced like burros across the ruts truck after truck old men with bandannas around their necks would wave truck after truck after truck loaded with earth I used to play now I stand and watch We would play for hours scamper up screes Climb trees to get closer to hawks flying in circles at times when we were tired of talking we would lie in the grass and look up into the blue sky that vibrated like hummingbirds wings - a times when we were still we could hear each others breathing the hawk breathing, breath, blood and root. The trucks came in waves and I stood against them drowning watching not breathing unable to catch my breath as they took me away one truck at a time one hawk at a time.
