The Older Gods

By Ironfeather

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

THE OLDER GODS Two spirits walking side by side And none would dare oppose them; Spawned by Darkness in the dawn of time ... But, Man it was that chose them. He built an altar to their name And burned a fire thereon, Sacrificed to them at dusk And sang of them at dawn. Each race of man, in far-flung land With language of his own, Learned their universal names And carved them on the stone. Their names were Loneliness and Fear; (They were known throughout the Earth), And they lived with every mortal man From the moment of his birth. In loneliness we made a camp Around a blazing fire ... And forged the bonds of friendship In the furnace of desire. We were first a family ...                           Then a tribe ...                                     and, finally, a race; And the bond that linked us each to all                       was the fear in every face. Loneliness helped us build a city On the broad and fertile plain; Fear came and helped us wall it in ... (But, would not leave again). They were with us            Around those ancient fires ...                         And they are with us here ...                                         Universal Loneliness                                              Universal Fear. Universal loneliness and universal fear ... They drive a lover from our arms ... Or draw a stranger near. Universal Lonely-Fear ... Through the ages hear the cry; "O Lord! Don't make me live alone!" "Please, God! Don't let me die!" Loneliness grows smaller ... fear weaker                                      when they're shared; Take my hand ... I'm lonely ... I'll take yours ... if you're scared .... Written October 18th, 2001 © on Sep 10 2001 12:36 PM PST   0 • 12 • 10
