The Day You Said Goodbye
By Jenni
Twenty-three years ago today, you left this world, Leaving behind nine kids with hearts so cold. At that time I was only twenty-three, And the youngest was merely a baby. I still remember it as tho' it was yesterday, You're still so alive to us in every way. Sometimes I'm still filled with so much sadness, It was hard at times dealing with all the madness. Your ideals and values still live within us all, To the younger ones, these values I constantly try to install. And except for one, they all made me proud, As I'm sure you've noticed from your home in the cloud. The girls have all grown up now, I was happy I kept my vow. They all have families of their own, Yet they have never left me alone. Big brother has migrated, left our little island, Made a home for himself in a place so grand, If only our last brother didn't have all those scars, He wouldn't, today, be behind bars. So today, as I passed by your grave, I tried, for their sake, Mom, to appear brave. I hold on to the best of your memory, Knowing that they will have to suffice for me.
