Mourning Our Merry (Inspired by Last Great American - Five For Fighting)

Mr. Merry was America's "Last Great American", Today we hear of his funeral throughout the land. Through the town the pallbearers sing old songs Of a purple mountain, but they've got it all wrong. America's not the way it used to be, Though clearly this place is the land of the free. We've got hatred and violence, and Each day a criminal to sentence. There was none of this when our Merry was born, When American was the reason for the flag we adorn. Now we suffer through wars, What happened to peace? We only honor our heroes once they are deceased. What happened to "United we stand, divided we fall"? For society today's not America at all. We now mourn the loss of our dearest Merry While souls of our soldiers grow tired and weary. What have we gained from our pain and our penance? Nothing but a generation named "America's menace." As I place a red rose upon Merry's coffin, I hear someone whisper, "May society be softened."This was an assignment for Language Arts class. Not my best, but still I posted it anyhow.
