Loopholes

By Michael Daugherty

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

I knew not why it happened there were none that I could ask; the mind had aged in this young body and blown away the foggy past. I did not know the boy before me though I've met his thoughts and dreams; remembered reels have shown his motives were too massive for his seams. He crossed into his dreams one night and left no forwarding address; I awoke in man's reality and started mopping up his mess. Although he tied his knots in earnest I arrived to let them go; the ropes all hang backstage now he's no longer with the show. I'm not expecting his returning he never was the social sort; there'll be no window candle burning in the tower of last resort. For I knew not why it happened there were none that I could ask; but the torch had passed before me now I perform my programmed task.
