\"O Vanity!\"

By NanaBear

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

O vanity!  The sieve of all good men upon the earth, Which allows pride to blind their minds to truths of greatest worth. "We must not be deceived!" they say, but is is mere excuse To trust in man, not in the Lord, and all good sense abuse. What foolishness!  To study years, philosophies of men, To gain the world yet lose their souls, and what will they do then? Reject the Light, in ignorance, and fight God with contempt And turn deaf ears toward His servants crying, "O repent!" They thirst for one another's blood, love carnage and destruction, For truth has ceased to shine in them.  The devil, by abduction, Has taken all their light away and bound them in the dark. Because of vanity the truth could never hit its mark. When truth's revealed, most dare not trust their hearts, their ears and eyes, Therefore is understanding veiled to all those who despise The promptings of God's Spirit to the humble and the meek. And they will never learn His mysteries, for they will not seek! If man will not be taught by God, the devil will supply And fill the void to please men's hearts with every pleasant lie To bring a curse upon their heads.  Where is the dignity Which follows men who will pursue the course of vanity?
