Play Or Pass
By NanaBear
We all are good, when we're asleep, as innocent as babes. But of what value is such virtue silent as the graves? Just to the extent we lull and soothe sensibilities to sleep, Do we destroy and neutralize God's laws which we should keep. To stand listlessly by and tolerate wrongs done to brothers Without protest, because those wrongs aren't done to us, but others, Is almost equal to approval and makes us accessory To that wrong. Hence God declares our repentance necessary. Lincoln said that slavery was based upon a clear, Though very wrong idea, that no man could interfere With one man's right to enslave another. Were this premise right, Then no one could correct another's wrong, what ere his plight! He may be awake to his own wrongs, but must to others' keep His silence. Thus, to that extent, does active virtue sleep! The doctrine of abject obedience to an authority Does tend in this direction, right or wrong though they may be. It means submission to our leaders, heedless of their course, Remaining passive to their wrongs which brings mankind remorse. Do we not owe much of our civil and political liberty To "rebels" such as Washington, who fought authority? If he had been "obedient", asleep to others' wrongs, How different would world history be and still enslaved its throngs. Blind obedience to mortal man is like an anesthetic Which puts the conscious sense to sleep or makes it apathetic. It's our imperative duty to keep every sense awake Of right and wrong, and in attue with God, lest we forsake A crown of victory won by exercise of truth and will. We "play or pass" each day we live, our duty to fulfill. © on Aug 26 2001 05:27 PM PST 0 • 9
