Love Light

By rcpollitz

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

I drive down the highway of life in a daze. In my memory I glimpse the lives I have touched, and those that have touched me. It's dusk and the darkness is rushing to envelope me. One by one the stars appear like memories of old friends. In the distance my eyes are drawn to a solitary street light, Its pale yellow glow warning of paths crossing in the night. The soft, warm illumination fills my eyes with hypnotic melancholy. It beckons me as its pole stands rigidly at attention giving support to the light in its silent vigil. Like a sentinel it stands guard its glow casting ghostly shadows. The light never quite reaches into the gloom at the roads edge. It causes me to reflect on those memories that never seem to stay in focus. Yet this light brings me comfort like a hand on my shoulder as I cruise through the night. Its soft glow fills the car as I drive past. The shadows it casts silently play across my seats, then quickly exit over the dash and out the window. I capture one last glimpse of that light in my mirrors, and once again I am left travelling with only the stars. It's only then that I realize that the light, left me thinking of you.
