(Study for) The Wall
By St Alcohol
the boys had seen the wall we all knew it was there we'd been around it, seen it's back but the boy still wanted over he was a few years older than me but we were friends on a lonely block he wanted over the wall, past it beyond it, as if the wall itself held him in rather than being a relic we marched down to the wall one sunday, skipping church, knowing we were missed we snuck in, took his pole from the school and headed out to the wall the grass was soft, the earth but he wasn't worried about this side he took his pole and running, missed the crest and toppled down again, he took his pole and up, and that was the last I saw of him church was out, my lunch was cold from corner-waiting but when he did not come home i was recruited to the search. we searched the wall, both sides out, but there wasn't any trace i still stand there, under the picnic-tree i still see that crest, his determination, as he leaped it he made it over the wall and that was the last i saw of him Written February 24th, 2002 © on Feb 24 2002 01:44 PM PST 0 • 9
