Fighting The Dragon

By StrmDncr

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

It breathes, sucking cool clean air Leaving the acrid smell of smoke Scorched stone and timber mark it's path Destruction, waste everywhere I follow in its wake Moving through the dark interior My sword and pike in hand Ready to face the final battle My body in tune Senses keen and honed My armor hot and heavy Sweat trickles down my back I hear the cries of the innocent Urging me deeper into the darkness Flames lick at my heels While I search every blackened corner A child huddles in the darkness Scared, crying I wrap him in the safety of my armor Snug and secure He clings to me for dear life My strength giving hope I defy the dragon to stop me Defeat me, just try This child well be safe Free from the blistering heat Light filters through the gloom Guiding my way We break through the smoke Bursting out into the light of day Waiting arms take my burden And I return to wage war Come to me demon Show thy ugly face Do battle with this warrior I will not be denied The dragon's breath assaults me Slowing my steps I move forward pike at the ready Watching for its attack Before me the dragon rises Rearing its massive head He bellows smoke and cinder Laying waste to my path I wheeled my sword in anger Fury deep within my soul Slicing, hacking away at the threat I spar and drive on with an iron will Spiting fire at my challenge He parries my attack I thrust harder, stronger Forcing him back into the gloom Fighting on with thunder in my heart I drive my sword home Lance in my grip I charge the demon piercing him to the core He stagers, spewing heat and smoke I twist my weapon digging deeper A mighty roar explodes Then silence One by one rays of light appear Illuminating my battlefield At my feet the dragon lays vanquished Puffs of steam rise from his nostrils I lower my weapon, my triumph complete My demon destroyed Life giving air washes through the ruins Removing my helmet I breathe deep Adrenaline drains, while pride soars The dragon sent back to hell A life saved And I will return to fight again Another Dragon Another day © 2001  P.M.Williams Written November 9th, 2001 © on Nov 09 2001 03:01 PM PST, Pat Williams   0 • 12
