She Looks Away

By sweetbrother

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

She looks away from the harshness of the faces on a screen she looks away from contemplation of lives lived in a foreign world. Could it be that she's afraid to see behind the screen? Eyes, upon the screen, melancholy yet hopeful look through her as if she were part of the performance. She is shown children at play in the rubble of society's war between the haves and have-nots; she is shown those a million miles and fifteen minutes away from a miracle. She looks away- even as her eyes are transfixed by the terrible beauty before her; she looks away from all these visions of want and poverty. Perhaps she feels too helpless to help, overwhelmned by the intensity of all that humanity. At the end of the performance she wipes a single tear from the corner of a mascara'ed eye- she can no longer look away- she has been moved tonight.
