Stability

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

Dr. Sara notes in my chart "He seems quite stable now; he readily chats with other patients or quietly reads. I think he's ready for discharge." Stability is a dream, a white picket for the mind a house full of imaginary Cosby kids where the voices inside no longer argue but politely ask, "Pass the potatoes." Stability is a myth used by the Dr. Sara's of the world to explain a patient's sudden serenity. Reality lurks beneath the surface like foul blisters about to soil healthy skin; those inner voices that sound so mellow are about to break out knives and guns and napalm Cruel creatures will come out in the night and unleash terrors unimagined by doctors with their sterile charts, diagnoses, and prescriptions Dr. Sara proudly pronounces the patient stable and ready for discharge, If she could glimpse the nasty reality within she'd run and hide and scream.
