Wee Rabbit
By tgb
There was a wee rabbit who lived in a field, Who’d often dream of a great summer yield, Of sunshine, and fresh grass, and warrens, and does, And he knew of this place if he’d dare only go. Twas a park within sight, But it filled him with fright, For although twas not far, There’s the river of tar. So Wee Rab asked his pal, a wily young hare, To watch for the lights if to cross he would dare, So Wily agreed, but with lights closed his eyes, And if Rab hadn’t jumped, he’d surely have died. And the wily wee hare said sorry, go again, And of went Wee Rab, but back like a train, For here came the lights which surely meant death, And the wily wee hare just sat there and laughed. And 7 more times the Wee Rabbit went, And 7 more times he nearly met death, And 7 more times the wily hare laughed, But never again, for gone was the trust. And Wee Rabbit dreamed of the field of green, But always remembered the lies of old friend, So never again would he trust another, Not even his friends, his warren brothers. And the years passed on, and Wee Rab grew old, But he’d never the courage to travel abroad, When a wily wee hare said Rab, I’ll watch out, And if deaths lights I see then surely I’ll shout. And though Rab was wary, he was now very old, He’d give it a shot, he’d try to be bold, For he knew this was his final try, To see the field before he died. So run he did, and the hare did shout, But Rab just stopped and stared about, Caught in the lights staring death face on, His only regret, not seeing his field heaven. But here comes the hare and knocks Rab past, Though the brave young hare has run his last, For in saving Wee Rab he has died on the tar, And Wee Rab’s in the field that he’d thought so far. And the field was so green, and the warrens so deep, Plenty of room to run and leap, But to those he met, he praised his hare brother, Who’d died to show him he could yet trust another.
