A Difference Between Freedom of Expression & Maliciousness
I have pasted below my post on Dreamweaver's thread. When I posted it, I believed that the "poem" being discussed & the "poem" I read shortly after I came here, were one & the same. Perhaps that is not the case? I don't recall what I read earlier as having 2 authors. Perhaps changes were made? At this point, I don't know. But what I've gathered from the discussions is that someone's name was added to a highly controversial & offensive "poem" as an author, when in fact, he was not. If that is the case, it is not an example of freedom of expression. It is a malicious attack on someone's integrity ~ as an author & as a person. If an author's name was added to such material, without said author's consent, it should be deleted, & I believe the offender should be banned from the site. What is to protect others from the same treatment? If what I described is what happened, as a site administrator, I would be very concerned about potential legal repercussions for not removing it, especially if requested to do so by the unwitting victim. If I've misinterpreted the discussions, I apologize & this is irrelevant. Vicki "I haven't had a chance to post lately but I wanted to respond to your post about leaving. I hope you'll reconsider, Dreamweaver. I saw the aforementioned 'poem' shortly after I came to AllPoetry. While I, too, found it offensive, I chose to consider the source. Why give something so inane as this childish assertation of the author's right to freedom of expression, the power you & others are giving it? As Wendy & I think others have said, while I do not agree with the method the author has chosen, I wholeheartedly defend his right to do so. As Doret said, if the title is offensive, why continue to read? I did out of curiousity & to see if what followed would be as offensive. Now I choose not to read that author's other poetry. Rather than promoting it, as is being done by the continued discussion. If this were a site specified for pornographic poetry, I would not post here. It is not. It is a fantastic site providing us with a place to write, network & share with others who share a similar passion for writing, many who are quite gifted. There is a category for erotica which anyone can choose to read or post or not. If the above mentioned post is deleted, who decides what's offensive in the erotica category? What is one person's erotica is another's porn. After erotica were done being censored, what would happen to love poetry with offensive content? Who draws the line? Where is it drawn?
