Hawk's Lament

Hawk's Lament One morning while greeting the sun at its rise,     a hawk's shadow danced over me. She said, "If you've the time, and you love Mother Earth,     there's something I'd like you to see." I said, "Why of course, She's my mother, too,     please show me this curious sight." And if by some magic, my arms became wings,     and I soared into effortless flight. The journey she flew was not far away,     just over a few sandy dunes. The sight was surreal, with insect shaped ghouls,     driving pipes making raw earthly wounds. She asked, "Why are these men invading the Earth?     Is there something they're seeking to find?" I said, "Yes, I'm afraid there's money to be made     from the black oil under the ground." She said, "Why can't they see what's happening here,     to the children who live from the Earth? My friends, the coyotes said why won't men see     what ruining their lives will be worth?" "The rabbits and antelope eat grass from this ground     with poisons that surely can kill. Even the water we all seek to drink     may harm us when we've drunk our fill." "I see fewer horned toads wherever I fly...     I wonder what's happened to them? The eagles and deer are wondering now     if this nightmare will come to an end." "The owls and the nightbirds sing into the sky     for help from the planets and stars. No help seems to come between starlight and sun,     not from Aries, or Scorpio, or Mars." She said, "Every day more of those foul metal beasts     pump chemicals into our ground. I ask you to help us show others the way,     and turn this destruction around." I said, "Sometimes men's visions of riches to make     prevent them from seeing the way. They're blind to the danger to innocent lives     as long as they don't have to pay." I told her as long as some humans exist     who still care for all living things, we'll try to make changes and save what is left,     but our messages will need her great wings. She said, "Then find me the men and the women who love     all creatures no matter how small, and I'll give them some wings and show them just how     to save Earth for one and for all." So if you are greeting the morning some dawn,     and see a hawk flying above, Ask for some wings, and she'll take you in flight,     and bestow on you Mother Earth's love.
