Release In the hour of midnight moonless the sky coal black heavens above stars but a distant flicker a break of a branch twigs snapping a cry and a sound of a thud from a creature much larger than I into the dark woods I race dodging rocks and fallen trees I fall and scrape my knees, my nose broken drips sweet blood to my lips the animal must sense this for his footstep sounds are faster dead leaves give away his position or I would be seized by now I feel as a trapped rat running through this maze of forrest yet without whiskers I cannot feel my way and peril draws closer the ground becomes loose I hear a roar now different from that of the beast which chases me It is the ocean, many feet below a jump would be speedy death upon a hard jagged rock is a fate better than mauling and being torn apart limb by limb I leap William S.
