Reb Levi-Yitzhak of Berdichev in Synagogue Lord, here we congregate to learn –     and You hide, You hide     like a skulking cheat     behind a circus tent. Lord, here we congregate to hear –     and Your voice is thin as chicory     light as goose down,     empty of itself. Lord, here we congregate to praise –     and You the Stubborn G*d     fashion Yourself unlikable,     distant as the Urals. Lord, here we congregate to judge     You in Your golden dock.     Tremble, tremble at the verdict     given by Your creatures.Reb Levi-Yitzhak, one of the early leaders of the Chasidic movement in Judaism, was known to argue and bargain with God in the synagogue on behalf of his people. To Levi-Yitzhak, God was as immediate and intimate as a family member or a lover - the very people we love and with whom we argue in the "real world".
