The first day the guns muttered in the hills like newborn thunder impatient to escape. The second day mortar bombs, flying death, rocked ancient squares which wearily bore the onslaught. The third day death's smoky flowers thrust their heads above the silence. The last day was a void.this was written during the Balkans conflicts in the mid 1990s and seems to be as apt today as then.
