Gum Shoes
Walking down the street one day I saw a man who had holey and scuffed and ripped up shoes I walked over to him to say "I'll buy you a pair if you come with me to choose." So the day went on and we found a pair And then he asked for something more What he said was met with a blank stare Until his cheeks turned red and his eyes were cast down to the floor "When I was young I missed out on so much, and right now I'd love to have a stick of gum." I lifted up my hand to comfort, but he shyed away from my touch and in his eyes I could see a sincere need for that stick of gum I entered the drug store; I could feel those eyes on my back and when I left the warmth of the store, I felt guilt pang I ran back across the street and handed him a pack of gum I had purchased, then decided to hang I told him of youth and happiness and love He told me of drugs and of the strongest of hope against all foes He attempted to extract a stick of gum and had to give it a shove Then, to my surprise, he stuck the gum in the hole over his toes What he did with the new shoes showed amazing generocity He handed them to the man sitting on the next corner THE ONE WITH NO SHOES Written January 25th, 2002 © on Jan 25 2002 09:11 AM PST 0 • 12
