In the Cursed Valley
By Boekhtiar
In the Cursed ValleyThere in a desolate pass,Where Night's ravens made their nest,A lonely tree against the ochre dust,Stoops somberly, waiting to rest.Obscured by the dark foliage,Lies a cold, obsolete body,That once ensnared fathomless rage,Of life that man called tragedy. As if answering a forlorn gust,That passes the cursed valley,The body dances with a swaying lust,To Death's phantasmagoric melody.'Never again will you go hungry,'The wintry wind seemed to whisper,'Nor be judged by man's mockery,Of a destiny made out of paper.'But, the body will never be soothed,By petty reasoning born out of pity,For his only crime was to be in the truth,Forever lost in the mist of reality.'Was it evil to rid the world,'The ragged corpse seemed to cry,'Of a viper that has swallowed a pearl,That has nothing to lose but its lie?''And to take the pearl away,'Continues the dead with silent dignity,'For a wretched mother who lays,Beside her hungry children, helplessly?'An answer, we hope none; save a ruse,That the once living husk,With his neck adorned by noose,Is staring ruefully at the approaching dusk.By Boekhtiar bin Borhanuddin (Circa 1999)Do you think that the ending is too abrupt? Should I add on a few more stanzas? Written November 28th, 2001 © on Nov 27 2001 10:11 PM PST 0 • 10
