The Knight and the Lady

By Chris Winfield

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

“Your servant Lady,” the young man said, As he knelt before her bowing his head. “Arise Sir Knight,” she proffered her hand But he remained kneeling not daring to stand. “Arise Sir Knight, I need to hear thee.” Heart thumping the man unbent his knee. Head bowed he stood in his armour plain Wishing that he was fighting again With his sword in his hand fighting the foe Rather than facing this Lady of woe. “Tell me Knight of your valiant deeds.” As he told she sank to her knees. “My husband is dead?” she said at last. The young man nodded, his fear had passed. Throwing herself onto the cold stone floor She pleaded with him, “Please tell me more.” “My Lord did fight so terribly well Consigning his enemies to Hell. “Protect my wife,” the last words he spake, Before the Lord God his soul did take.” She rent her clothes and sobbed and cried The valiant Knight a child espied. “Hush dear Lady for thy child’s sake. The Lady sobbed, and her head did shake. She rose up from the cold, cold stone And spoke to the child in a softer tone. “Thy father is dead my only son Now you and I shall rule as one.” The child ran to his mother and said, “What do you mean? How is father dead?” “Your father dies fighting out foes This valiant knight brought us this tale of woe.” “Our thanks to you most brave dear Knight” The Knight bowed and left the sight Mother and son together for life Until the son could take a wife. The Knight called for his horse and was gone Riding westwards towards the sun. Written January 28th, 2002 © on Jan 28 2002 02:18 AM PST   0 • 1
