I Am From
By danih
I am from the lives of many. Those from the past, And those still living. I am from love and laughter, From once upon a time’s and happily ever after’s, From a poor family from Ireland, And a rich family from Britain. Stories of the Civil War when William Watkins “took ‘em,” And stories of my great grandmothers singing. I am from Native Americans, which my family found shameful. I am from Woodrow Wilson, And from a divorce that was painful. I am from beauty contests and backyard football games, Nursery rhymes and bedtime stories, From Sunday School and early mornings. I am from Thanksgiving gatherings. From homemade oyster stuffing, and overcooked turkey. From the men cheering, And the smell of my dad’s beef jerky. From many children at Christmas time. From, “That’s my toy!” And, “No, it’s mine!” I am from family prayers at supper time, Supper musicals, which tend to rhyme. I am from many, ‘I love you’s,’ And, ‘I love you too’s.’ I am from the love of song, The appreciation of hard work, And, “With God you can’t go wrong.” I am from prayers and love. I am from what has been, and what has become. I am from failure and success. I am from warm hugs, and a family that could never give more. © Danielle Harrison\'01, This was written for a class. You may not understand everything that I am from, but it is basically a brief recording of history written poetically.
