you must have asked yourself a thousand times what you saw in that angry man from mizzou rawboned and never weaned, sucking death from a glassine teat, raging vengeance for some long-forgotten childhood slight forever beyond his reach...but he held you close held you by the throat, justified your black eyes by telling tales of woe to rotgut sympathizers feeding your children despair...long-suffering, you survived the scars he carved with blind fists helpless with horror, damaged children never put right a woman tortured but still alive, that long-ago beauty smiling from yellowed paper, not yet broken sometimes I see her in your eyesThis is for and about my Grandmother, who survived 30 years of spousal abuse. --rough cut at reformat Written February 4th, 2002 © on Mar 09 2002 11:29 AM PST   18 • 0 • 1
