Cheyenne cowboys roam Wyoming skies arctic howl rushes lifts titanium glitter frigid dust devils yellow light spills from late-night diner the hound has run too far stands breathless sucked dry and put away wet I sip scalded dishwater and wait Somewhere in Nebraska midnight black flashes by illusionary sea infinite flat distance uninterrupted sailors of the night bound anywhere but here squalls that raise no waves shudder my window beat me to sleep Anita, Iowa contrast rolling hills blasted beige death's hand lingers in the fields quaint quiet town gingerbread houses and lutheran brick someone asks "why stop here"? two men with teardrop tattoos climb aboard, bound away anywhere but here Iowa City twelve years gone so little changed the places I learned to lust tasted hallucination's rush driving barefoot through the night every bar a story glide by old homes and party crash pad lawns my once and future home not for long, I linger farewell to new friends newports and coffee hello to family, memory wanderlust reignited as my aching feet touch down future still further east merely a sojournThis is the end of the road (diary).
