Professional Mourners
By docbooth
How silently they weep. Theirs is but a passing interest In those who now are mourned. They are not really mourners But those who attend on Death Either because of fashionable respect Or from morbid curiosity. In truth, how silently they weep For those they little knew Or little cared a day ago. “I’ve been to church,” they say Imagining their impiety Could bring comfort to those that truly grieve. How silently they weep And how they beat their hollow breasts. Their souls do not truly ache At the sorrow death can bring. Let there be no funeral for me But at my passing permit my friends One last and honest thought “He did his best, and may have often failed, But of our charity we ask May God rest his soul.” And this once spoken or even thought, Take heed! For you have moved one step nearer To your death. Written December 14th, 2001 © on Dec 13 2001 08:30 PM PST 0 • 10
