Skinks
By Grannyrosie
SKINKS A break within the winter clouds, So soon, after fall. I sought the precious sunbeams, Out by the garden wall. A rustle and a bustle, T'ween carpet, red, orange, brown, Prompted curiosity, Slowly, silently, bent down. Dearest little Skinks, Out to make the very most, Of Mother nature's sunshine, There, by that old gate post. Sleek ,shiny, little bodies, Elongated tails, Eyes bright, twinkling and winking, Circling slaters and snails. Precious little lizards, Avoiding predators so near, Be careful how you do approach, They run when full of fear. Like satin bolts of lightning, Under the cover hide, But saunter back to carry on, When they know you've gone inside. Go gently if you pick one up, They sometimes drop their tails, They do grow back in due time, But lost tail he will bewail. I would use a movie camera, To show people what they do. But every time that I approach, They know what I'm up to. They flash and dash across the cover, Related you are sure, The shining coat gives of a gleam, A star, or dinosaur?
