The owl and the emu
By Grannyrosie
THE EMU AND THE OWL Old Emu looked into a tree,His friend, the Owl was perching there, Said Emu`,to that wise Old owl,'How come is it, you wear a scowl'? 'Now listen Emu,here to me', replied that Owl above, 'You're face would drop a mile or two,If everyone expected you, To sleep all day, and then at night, When moon is shining, stars are bright, Go into woods, and find some food, As well as that I must be wise, judgements pass, sympathise. I tell you Emu, its a bother, I wish that folks would find another, Somebody else to hoot and scream, interrupting gentle dream, Making nightmares magnify, sitting here with blinking eye'. Emu stopped and thought about,Owl's lot in life, and said, 'See here old Owl, I have a plan, I'll swap with you,'cause I do stand, A few head higher than you do, folks wont even know that it's not you, Above them, on a branch up high,Just look at me,look at my eye, Reflected there, cannot you see, the wisdom that runs deep in me'? The Owl politely shook his head, and drily he replied, 'Oh Emu!, Such a clutz you be, you never, ever could be me. Your beak is long, and sharp, and fine, Nothing near as good as mine, Your wings are short, you cannot fly, how could you ever go on high? Then home in like a scud to show,The little varmits down below, Whose the boss,How you could think this, I'm at loss. Your legs are long, I do agree, Your eyes? Well deary deary me, They're mean and nasty, (pardon me),never could an Owl you be. Your feathers look as if you be, many brushes on a tree, You are ungainly, and your neck, crossed with Giraffe you were by heck'. What started out a pleasant chat, became a row, a nasty spat, the Owl flew off, hooting loud, the Emu marched away so proud. The Owl was suddenly appalled, By his pride he'd been enthralled, Forgetting wisdom, choosing scorn, forgetting manners with which born. 'Oh Dear', he said,'what have I done?, upset my friend without a doubt. Derogatory and rude to he, will he ever forgive me'? I must make haste to make amends, before our lifelong friendship ends. He found Emu by a quandong tree, 'Oh Emu!, I'm sorry, forgive me, I didn't mean to put you down, the words came without a thought. If wisdom is a part of me, thats not what I've shown to thee'. Come stand beside my tree, make out, a fine Owl you will be, no doubt, I'll try to make things up, you see, your friendship means so much to me'. If ever in life's travels you see, an Owl and an Emu near a tree, If you hear a strange Owl sound, somewhere between branch and ground, I'll tell you now, dont be surprised, by what is happening before your eyes. The Emu practising with a passion, to hoot and shriek in Owl fashion. Written December 13th, 2001 © on Dec 13 2001 03:01 AM PST, Patricia Rosenberg 0 • 10
