What Held Us True
By Janju
What Held Us True Not music in my head Of songs long dead That clutches my heart Makes me hold my breath Not the sound of your step Or the way you wept At a movie's sad ending And the stub I kept More than bouquets Sent on the days When memory failed Or when you were away Only time tells truth After snatching our youth What gave us endurance When others lose On days trouble entered Threatened to splinter We writhed in pain But still held together With little affection We chose a direction And often it brought Bitter reactions Still we danced the dance And we took the chance That in pain or joy Strength would enhance And now we ponder All the roads we wandered While we worked and lived And we grew fonder Not the heady passion Of this days' fashion But a velvet love Lined with compassion A sort of glue Now shared by few One word--commitment Held us true.
