The Last Love Letter
By jcwatson1979
One rainy day while I was cleaning the attic I came across an antique trunk Lifting The creaking lid I carefully began sifting through the treasures inside There was a wedding dress, yellowed with age A handmade quilt wrapped around a crystal vase Digging to the bottom of the trunk I came across a letter From my grandmother to my grandfather Carefully pulling out the letter I began to read To My One True Love I am missing you for you are too far away I am waiting for the day that you will come home so that we can wed I have had no reason to smile since this war started But when I think of you I can't help but smile For you are my sunshine The light of my Life A year and three months have gone by since I've seen you But there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about you I love you with my whole heart I am waiting for the day you come home Be carefull and hurry home With all my love Madeline Wiping a tear from my eye I looked at the date on the letter I was shocked The letter had been written six months before my grandfather died Picking up the letter I went downstairs to ask my grandmother what happened She told me he had come home a month after the letter was written They were married a month after that Then he was killed in a train accident The day after she found out she was three months pregnant with twins As my grandmother wiped away her tears I gave her a hug And thanked her for telling me Putting the letter back in the envelope I handed it to her As I left my grandmother's room I mad a promise to myself I would not marry until I found a love that would last for all time Till I found a love like my grandparents For my grandmother had loved my grandfather so much she never remarried The day I read my grandmother's last love letter I had a vision of what true love could be Written October 4th, 2001 © on Oct 04 2001 10:11 AM PST, Jeanette Watson 0 • 8
