I could not understand

By JoffreEssley

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

I could not understand, they played the dirge so slow. What man is this, that once stood tall, that death had brought so low. They must have loved him much, their weeping is so loud, and yet seems strangely distant, as muffled by a shroud. I long to look, to see them, to join this solemn rite, but wonder why they bring him thus, in sullen, darkest night. Its dark, so dark, that surely they must stumbling lose their tread, and stumbling risk upsetting their honored, quiet dead. Steady their feet and gentle their step, belying my simple fear, and giving pause to simple thought – why are they all so near? It seems that I should know him, the one who chanced to die, but little was I ready when I realized it was I. Written December 2nd, 2001 © on Dec 05 2001 02:52 AM PST   0 • 10
