Ben Nevis, Western Scotland.

By John the poet

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

This massive mountain called Ben Nevis, that towers over Fort William and seen between showers, is simply wonderful and so incredibly beautiful! Like a magnet, it attracts thousands of people to stare and talk about thousands of people who climb and walk to its summit along the busy, narrow track and who then suffer the agony of the descent on the way back! The one big surprise was not to see a huge, solid rock at the summit for me. Instead, thousands of crushed boulders cover the flattened Scottish crown, so that made me wonder. "Did the gods stop to rest on this spot?" I pondered. "Did slaves drag lumps of rock to the top?" I considered. "Perhaps the Ice Age had a part to play by dumping its load as it melted away." I digress. The views are splendid, really stunning. The air is clean, truly refreshing. You can stand on the man-made tower for viewing but cast a disapproving eye on the derelict building. Is it history or a heap of visual pollution? Surely this eyesore needs immediate attention. Nearby, there’s a pretty mound with the white walled hut on top. Now at the British Highest War Memorial, please stop and show your respect for ‘The Fallen of All Nations.’ Finally, I extend my hearty congratulations to all you fine Ben Nevis climbers, for we have become adventurous conquerors. To see my Ben Nevis photographs, you will need to visit my web site in the 'Out and About' section.
