Invitation to a Wedding

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

She's known him for two weeks (or is it three?); a quick courtship led to promises of eternal bliss She's just regained custody of her brood of six; he's just informed his parole officer of his new address A lovely household they will make His friends say marriage will be good for him; he promises no more brawls in the neighborhood pub no more chasing jailbait and cocaine; he's looking forward to domestic life She has stars in her eyes at the promise of no more lonely nights of tears. He's strong & handsome & devoted to her (and her six kids he's never met) &, he swears, his violent streak is behind him and she doesn't believe the slanderous tales told by his first wife She can forgive long-ago errors ("possesion with intent..." is such an ugly phrase) if he can overlook her loss of youthful beauty & the brittle edge in her voice as she calls his name May their life together be blessed with joy.Yes, these people and their situation are real.
