Halloween

By Jonathan Wikkins

Halloween is coming soon…     For most it’s a happy time…     A time for ghosts and goblins,           harvest moon, jack-o-lanterns,               and the like…     But not for me…     A time to say gladly,           “trick or treat”.      What I got one Halloween,           was neither trick nor treat…     It’s even a time for hot air balloons,           snuggling with someone special               against early winter’s chill…     But not for me…     It's a time to plan           our winter activities,               skiing, snowmobiling and more.      It is a time to dust off           snow shovels,               and make sure your winter clothes                     fit and are still warm….     It’s time for All Saint’s Day           and all that entails…     All these things do is remind me           that the first of November               is almost here,                     and all that goes with it.      It is a day           that will be burned               into my memory                     as long as I have one…     It is a day that,           for the foreseeable future,               I will go to a very special place…     There I will sit upon a stone,           and remember…     I will remember           what was good in my life,               and what was not…     I will remember what happened…     I will cry,           for it is a sad day indeed,               for me…     It is a day           when all my hopes and dreams,               were dashed into a million pieces…     That awful day,           when I looked out               into the sunrise,                     and said:     “Baby, you missed a beautiful sunrise.”            and she seemed to say to me:       “No I didn’t, my love,           I was here, and shared it with you…       Even though you can’t see me,           I’m here with you.”…     I feel I have remembered           many other things               she seemed to say                     at that moment…     For you see           on that dreadful day,               the day after Halloween                     that year,               I lost something special in my life…      That day,           when after a valiant fight,               the love of my life went away,                     never to return…     And I will visit that special place,           from no matter where I live,               where my wife is buried,                     on the first of November,                         the anniversary of her death… © Jonathan Wikkins October 16th, 2001 Revised February 20, 2008 All Rights ReservedWritten October 16th, 2001 © on Oct 16 2001 10:47 AM PST, David Michael Shurtleff   angst
