That Morning

By Jonathan Wikkins

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

That morning,     was the morning,           my life changed forever… All I had wanted     was peace, love,           and contentment. That morning,     I told you           I did not know,               what you wanted                     me to do. That morning,     I told you           I would fight,               as long as necessary… I would accept     as much of you,           as I could get,               even just a little… But I did not know     what you wanted           me to do. I did not want     to make some decisions,           I knew I might have to… So I asked you,     for your help… As we have all heard,     all our lives… “Be careful what you ask for,     for you might get it”… But I asked you anyway… I needed your help,     for I knew not           what to do. We had never talked     like this before,           and never would again… You could not give me     your answer,           for you were unable… Or at least in the way,     I wanted you to… Yet, that morning,     you gave me           your choice… Although,     I did not realize it           at the time;               you gave me                     your decision… When I did realize it later,     I realized,           that your choice,               was not for yourself,                     for your life was over,                         and you knew it… I realized that your choice;     was for me… So that I could live again,     grow again,           and           most of all,     love again… Even though     I did not at first,           I thank you,           I honor you,           I respect you… For your decision     was for me… For now,     I shall become,           that man               you sacrificed yourself for… I now become me… © Jonathan Wikkins December 6th, 2001 Revised February 10, 2008 All Rights Reserved Written December 6th, 2001 Revised February 10, 2008 © on Dec 06 2001 04:16 AM PST, David Michael Shurtleff   spiritual
