We Gave

By Jonathan Wikkins

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

Not too long ago… We gave each other something special,     something wonderful, something precious… We said the words: “I want to offer you this gift, for safe keeping;     it will be yours as long as you wish to keep it;           I give it to you freely, without reservations,               or expectations of anything,                     including yours in return…” And we accepted our gifts by saying: “I accept this gracious gift from you,     I will cherish it always; I will take it with me everywhere I go.           And even if you want yours back;               I will then keep a little piece of it. Till then, it will be with me always, my love…” Not too long ago… We gave each other something so special, so wonderful     so very precious, we’ve kept them ever since;           and never once wanted, to give them back. Not too long ago… We gave each other something so very special;     so very wonderful; so very precious;           something we’ve never asked, for its return. For not too long ago…     We gave each other, our hearts… And now… Today… We bring our two hearts together…     To blend them together, as one…           To beat as one, till the end of time… © Jonathan Wikkins November 5th, 2001 All Rights Reserved a poem i've written to be read at my wedding Written November 5th, 2001 © on Nov 05 2001 12:15 PM PST, David Michael Shurtleff   angst • love
