Penny Martyrs

By Katrina Armour

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" So they shot him Right between the eyes went their cylindrical steel ignorance And the lions ate "the rib" The Christians made big bonfires When they heard the news Using the cheap wine of vagabonds And stolen hotel matches They pressed the flames upon their flesh Pretending they were cold And when the daylight came And the body was gone to nature We bought wooden penny martyrs On the corner of Fifth and Main Unable to comprehend our own madness As the final wave of euphoria washed over And we were stupid all over again Written August 23rd, 2001 © on Aug 23 2001 12:35 PM PST, Katrina Armour   0 • 10
