The Demon We Share
I see her sitting in the corner Looking like me a few years back. Bandages around her wrists, A notebook to her breast, Expression on her face that shrieks, "GET ME OUT OF HERE!" "Yes," I say. "That's me." She just moves to hide her tears. Does she realize that I was once like her? Is she jealous because I make it sound so easy? Oh my girl, it's not easy. It will never be easy. My lips don't move to speak although inside I scream. "Yes! I understand! You are not alone!" I know she would never believe my words. That's just how the demon is. It moves through your dreams while you sleep And through your hands when you hold the blade And in your mind when you try to be happy And through your veins when heaven is near. All I can say to her before I walk away Comes through what is left of the demon in my blood; Comes from what is left of the devil from within. "Just keep shavin', girl. One day you'll break skin."
