Life Is Nuts (Based A true story)

By Lone Poet

He looked up at me as if to say, "Here I am, come out and play" his tiny feet began to leap, and with one gigantic sweep... Claws ripped holes through my screen door, in a brief moment of panic I freaked out for it was one nutty sight to see, I raised my fists and let out a shout as this squirrel frantically tried to break free It all came to me as a big surprise, grayish brown fur flying in midair such fear in those mischievous eyes, I watched him jump up and down in despair Stuck between two doors, inner one constructed of wood outer one was steel and mesh, perhaps he just wanted some food but his chances of getting it were slim, he was more scared of my human flesh than I was afraid of him I dared not open the door, for it could surely mean a furry visitor in my latrine or a raid on the fridge, a mess indeed, should he discover there's more to eat here than berries, acorns and seeds As I waited for the little guy to leave, a tale I'm sure most would find hard to believe he finally departed the way that he came back through the screen, over the rail, what a pathetic shame In a civilized world he must fight to survive, as homo sapiens seek to conquer and thrive claiming all of Mother Nature's gifts, yet we give back nothing at all; while a simple creature only exists hoping for love, a meagerly snack, or to snuggle in a warm bed by first snowfall © 1997, 2004 SmSThis is true!! A few yrs. after moving in my house, I thought it was so cute seeing nature and all the little critters around...I lived in an area with no wildlife before. I was throwing food to the squirrels on my porch...One day one of them went insane and clawed through my screen door and somehow got stuck between that door and the wooden inside door...hubby was at work and I was freaking out! I didn't know what to do!! lol I could see the squirrel jumping up and down through the glass panes in the door, he was in a frenzy...I didn't open it up, for fear it would run in the house...well, after several hours, he found his way back out the hole in the screen door...and we had to get a new screen put in. I never fed another squirrel again after that! Or at least not in front of my house. Written March 16th, 2002 © on Mar 16 2002 12:43 PM PST, Sheryl Marcia Schwartz   11 • 9 • 4
