shell
By miranduh
the difference between you and me is that i am in a pretty girl shell, which shouldn't consume me, only it does, and you are in an ugly girl shell, which should consume you, only it doesn't.I really struggled with the labelling of my "prettiness" during junior high, and sometimes I still do. I'd be ecstatic when someone thought I was pretty, and slunched down when they didn't. But most of the time, I realize that beauty is relative -- not to how others define you, but in what you choose to believe about yourself. Recently, when I was feeling really ugly, my boyfriend said to me, "It doesn't matter how you look, I would love you no matter what. You're still you." I wrote this poem, which may seem pretentious at first. Just try and read it without any pre-judgement. I think it shows how the concept of physical "beauty" factors into our lives, and reflects that the way that we deal with it makes all the difference in our own personal contentment.
