Father

I never knew my biological father Always hated him But needed him to be there Or at least thought I did What I didn't realize was that I had you, all along To teach me to play baseball To help me learn how to ride a bike To guide me and mold me into a man I never realized that you were there I always resented you That you were not my real father I see now That I was wrong You are the only father I have ever known I never thanked you for that Thank you Thank you for being there Thank you for teaching what I needed to know Thank you for protecting me Thank you for being the best father you could be Even though I was a rotten son I'm sorry I got through 19 birthdays without him I got through my first date without him I went to the little league playoffs three times without him I got a great job without him I am going to go to college without him I am going to marry without him I am going to be a father myself, someday, without him Who needs him? You were there for 19 birthdays You were there when I left for my first date You were there at all my games You were there when I got that job you will be there then I start college You will be at my wedding You will see your grandchildren I'm not glad he's dead I wasn't sad when I heard the news This poem is just to say I'm sorry for never being there for you, as a son Like you were there for me, as a father And to say Thank you for being there for me Even though I never knew it at the time Thank you, fatherI wrote this as I watched an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
