Why we write

By Richard J Sereday Jr

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

It is hard to explain why we write, to someone who does not already know. We write of the thing we know, as well as the things we dream of. We write of our own experiences, as well as those of others that we witness. At times we write of nothing at all and just let the ink flow. Why is it we feel this compunction to write? It's something we may never know. But do it we will, for this calling we hear, and it's one that can not be ignored. And we may write a piece because of something we read, that has provoked some thoughts inside our head, so well wishers offer advice and sympathy, though the experiences were not ours. So when you read the thing that we've written, just remember, we are writers and that's what we do. We live in this world, but we live in our heads, and our words will always ring true.
