What Mama Said
By Soulslulluby
I am my own brand of cool At least that’s what mama said I thought she meant I was foolish I never understood her At least not until today She never meant it to hurt She knew that I was different And wanted me to know that I wasn’t like other girls I didn’t flirt or date I didn’t wear pretty make-up I only dressed up for church She knew I’d bloom on my own She knew I’d be a lady She just didn’t know when or how She wanted me to be strong Beauty was another goal Most of all just to be me It didn’t matter to her What the other mothers said Only that I had fun and played When the kids would laugh and tease She’d tell me to ignore them “You are your own brand of cool” Now I know that she was right People will like me for me And if they don’t then who cares Because my mama told me… I am my own brand of cool.
