Like my mother before me
By susanne
Like my mother before me and hers before she mirrored in a reflection a pattern did I see A soft silhouette of simple design pre-cut from a pattern within a man's mind A turn of the century view they of we that woman should live as expected to be Sweet and demure, Subservient to he; This my mother before me and hers before she... From the surface of the pattern drawn are those who might believe She content with her life in patriarchal society But little did man know for he chose then not to see... The struggles that lay deep within her and a spirit which longed to be free... To speak from her heart her convictions To fear not her form of expression To oust from the throne the suppression and negative forms of aggression They have courage, strength, and resilience the women in my family... So like my mother before me and hers before she They set upon a torturous course to earn respect and equality Now the pattern is intricately woven and the torch it was handed to me What will become of our future in this twenty-first century? She has grown from our strength and our wisdom from our success and failures as well Thus speaks a new generation her beliefs and convictions to tell... And like her mother before her and hers before she She'll carry the torch lighting the way so all of her sisters can see. Written March 26th, 2002 © on Mar 25 2002 09:55 PM PST 18 • 0 • 9
