End of a Dream(a Challenge)

By The Golden Pen

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

It was a frigid night, Cold and dark When havoc struck around midnight Amidst a starlit sky of velvet black And the sea witnessed in silence As the great ship went down Like Leviathan, Descending upon his icy grave without a fight;   She was the ship of dreams and innovation, Designed in an era Where elegance and science Married into the institution of industrial commerce And where opulence and progress Went hand in hand With science and technology;   She was to be a truly unprecedented dame An 'unsinkable' vessel That would put all other vessels to shame;   Yet she was haunted by a dreadful curse That encircled her like an albatross That would soon seal her fate;   The fate of two thousand souls were sealed on that chilly morning Of April fifteen, Nineteen hundred and twelve As they boarded the mighty ship Titanic On the icy docks of Southampton;   Across the frigid Atlantic The mighty ship went on At full speed ahead As Captain Smith ordered to Sail full speed ahead! And uttered his famous line, "Take her to Sea, Mr. Murdock, if you please." And the passengers dined in fine luxury Inside this gargantuan monster That would carry them across the Atlantic Into New York Harbor; But it was stupidity and overconfidence That technology could produce such an infallible vessel, That technology and ingenuity Could far exceed human care Did man overlook basic precautions And endangered the lives of so many souls .... Had they been better prepared for such a calamity So many lives would have been spared!   But like fools, man entrusted machinery Over common human sense And by a senseless zealous dream of greed, victory and success the very worst occurred!   On a frigid night one cold April evening An icy gloom Hung over the Titanic As it did await its doom An iceberg hit its side And spilt the vessel in two Amid the horror and the panic The passengers did seem To remain calm amidst the tragedy That herald the End of a Dream   Eighty seven years later That mighty ship sails on And continues to haunt the memories Of the few survivors of that awful tragedy. Like a ghostly specter The world still holds on to the legend With much fascination and fervor to this immortal tale Of death and horror in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean That herald the End of a Dream!
