The Switchblades

By Wesley Storer

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

This poem's title does not denote or designate any specific racial group, but rather the 'Crunches', 'Buzzes' and 'Jims' of the world, who were, and still remain, a bad influence, playing with knives outside the Griffith observatories of the world. I never wanted to feel Better than other people I never wanted to be judged By the company I was forced to keep Because of my poverty; Cheerfully, I never complained I never wanted to be worshiped Just have a sense of worthiness I would have left Spokane Moved to Southern California To be a movie Star years ago But I didn't want to live With switchblades on the street Because I had no money Neither was I Gay No job references or skills Just an A.A. Degree unworthy  Of the paper it was written on The world is filled with people who have the power and glory To make sure they  never Have to tolerate anyone around They don't want being around Because they feel superior I was never one of themBelieve me, I would never write a poem like this, unless I had been in L.A. I stayed at the Midnite Mission, because I was poor and could find no job. There were winos there, who would kill you for a bottle of wine. I only stayed a few days.
