Simple Truths
There upon eternity’s edge I see You there, softly calling "Come home Child of Mine, come home" And here amidst the chilling night I cry back for the release of my heart I try then to reach out But my hand won’t stretch The depths behind me pull back viciously And I fall into my self-abyss Release is so close, yet I am so far I am the slave and the master rolled into one This abyss of mine is the pit of guilt The snare of pride and of sinful youth Its night is deep and its deception true Lie veiled as truth and all too real Forgiveness is close but I’ve damned myself It is there in the heart of the night That I see Your eye in the midst of the storm Subtle yet true, I can’t deny You any longer Hypocrisy dies in the grave of confession As a ray of light pierces the clouds Funny, my night wasn’t deep as it felt Not to You anyway, it was merely an inch Your hand reaches down and in a mighty flash Hell runs for cover from invading love divine A few nails later my life is reborn It’s not over yet though Back into the night I shall charge forth I left those behind who shared my same cry If only they knew, if only they could see That night in its darkest is no thicker than a shadow. This was written for my Creative Writing class at UALR. It serves as reflection on the dark shadows I've faced in my own life, and how they have served to push me to stand beside those who face those same shadows today. The point: there is no point of no return as long as you're willing to fight your way back up. Written January 4th, 2002 © on Jan 03 2002 06:41 PM PST 18 • 0 • 13
