Faces, passing in and out of mind Memories of stars which have shined Openings and closings Crowded solitudes Who were these people? A child appears in the flower of youth Pressing her face to the window She wonders what is the truth Her attention seems to falter When she eyes the candy all about her And wonders if they are free. Child, didn’t your mama tell you That nothing comes for free Everything has a price Everyone has a price to pay. Faces, dreams of olden times All fade and form new rhymes As we follow in the footsteps Of our deceased heroes Seeking out faces Which are non-existent.
