Special Friends

Special Friends Across the miles and vastness of space at a time when I needed a friend And didn't even realize it, you knew You told me stories, you made me smile and finally made me realize That I had a friend in you When first we met after all that time you treated me like a princess You were my special friend You helped me believe in myself when I never thought I could My ally to the end I think you feel the same as me this friendship and special love I really hope you do To bring each other laughter and joy and maybe share some tears As only true friends do For my dear friend Roland Garner By Dee Garner October 31, 2000Roland and I first met through email when he was trying to find family members. That was back in early 1996. We determined that we weren't related (it would have been on my husband's side) but we became good friends through many emails after that first one. He's told me many stories about him and his life, some of them very humorous. He lives in Maryland a few miles from where my son and his family live and when I went to visit them, we made a point of meeting in person. We spent quite a lot of time together and I also met his wife who was in a nursing home. They're both wonderful people but Roland has been a true and delightful friend. Update: Roland passed away in November 2005 and I miss him a lot. I spoke to him on the phone just a couple of days before he died... he was his usual rambunctous self, wanted me to break him out of the nursing home which his daughter had placed him I'm glad this was my 14th poem on here so I can enter it as such in this contest. © on Oct 29 2001 04:18 PM PST, Dee Garner personal • love
