When the Stars Spoke

"When the Stars Spoke",                        ..... An elder Indian of many seasons recites this message....                        I climbed... a mountain once,                        there .....I saw the great bear and the eagle.                        They told me of times.... when the stars spoke                        and the waters danced......adorned in many colors.                        I did not know what they meant ...then,                        but one day.... I saw a deer.. crossing the open meadow,                        she stopped ..and looked at me.                        I could hear her thoughts... and I grew sad,                        I would not climb... that mountain again                        or look for the great bear or brave eagle.                        No, the river drains the sky... and fills the belly of the sea.                        Soon the sky will be empty... and her colors will be no more.                        The days of gray clouds come,                        and the spirit of the wind... will not speak.                        Only the night... will share its voice,                        and all creatures...including man ...will tremble.                        There will be no warmth at night.... even by your fires... or in your wigwams.                        Make peace... with your brother... and cling to the                        breasts of your young brides and husbands.                        I will pray... the great spirit, the one that set all in motion,                        will look again on this place with favor.                        Whauccatan...Great One....wake us from our sleep                        and let us see ...the colors of day again.                        Light the sky...with your fire... and warm our hearts.                        Ask the wind spirit.... to speak to the eagle... and the bear,                        give them a new vision...                        so that we may be at peace with the earth again.                        We honor your creation,                        all things have life... and a voice.                        We will listen and learn and remember the stories of our fathers.                        When the stars spoke.                        by Darmok 5/96 Written November 15th, 2001 © on Nov 15 2001 09:58 AM PST, Darmok    0 • 12
