The Saddle
By Gunslinger
I walked up to a saddle- At a yard sale yesterday And as I reached to touch it, The years all fell away. My mind went back a lifetime, To when I rode the range... I almost bought the saddle... And I find that rather strange. You see I have no horses- And I haven't had in years. Perhaps I want security- To help allay my fears. The fears of growing older- The dread of coming death... And entering the shadow... After drawing my last breath. People say that man lives once- Then ceases to exist... I claim to be no genius... But I cannot believe this. I read it in the Bible- There is a God above... To some He is the righteous Judge- To others He is Love. No matter what a man has done Or what a man believes... To stare into the face of Death... An empty feeling, leaves. I turned back from the saddle- And to a friend of mine... He told me, "Ask about the price". I told him that was fine. It was a moment's weakness- And thankfully, it's gone... I drove off from the yard sale... Where the saddle sits alone. Written February 22nd, 2002 © on Feb 22 2002 02:06 PM PST, John R. Yaws 0 • 10
